received an interesting email from a friend today. He has just started getting into meditation and has bumped up against an issue a lot of people run into:

I have been reading Eckhart Tolle’s book on The Power of Now and it has got me thinking about Zen philosophy again. I heard that you used to practice meditation quite a bit and I wanted to ask you about it.

Zen is contradictory to most of the philosophy I invest in, but it’s unclear whether or not it has to be exclusive. One struggle I have is the idea that ruminating in the past or future is detrimental to one’s overall consciousness, even when it is positive. Tolle says, the idea of a future heaven creates a present hell. Does attachment need to be taken to this extreme? If I didn’t think of the past or future, wouldn’t I become an irresponsible person?

I started meditating when I was 16. I got very into it and read a lot about spirituality and eastern philosophy in high school and college. I rarely talk or write about spiritual practices because I honestly believe that spiritual experiences are, by definition, unquantifiable and therefore exceedingly difficult to put into words. They’re also exceedingly personal. So I just rarely even bother going there.

With that said, this is a pretty common dilemma for people who are exposed to zen and eastern philosophy — that the idea of “unattachment” isn’t exactly practical or even applicable in modern life. You have to remember that a lot of these philosophies were developed thousands of years ago when there were far fewer demands and complexities in everyday life. So the idea of going and sitting in a cave for nine years and staring at a wall wasn’t exactly giving up a whole lot.

The usual sticking point for everyone is, “If I’m supposed to be attached to nothing and desire nothing, how the hell do I get anything done?” Hell, how did Tolle write multiple 300-page books if he was completely unattached to the future? Wouldn’t he just stare and smile at the typewriter?

The problem comes with the explanation of attachment. Many people take it as wanting or desiring anything. This is where you get people living in communes, giving up their possessions, moving to Tibet and whatnot. It’s also the main reason I’ve never felt comfortable in any spiritual community I’ve found, because I think they commit the same foul, just in the opposite direction.

The catch is that actively being unattached to things is still being attached to something. You’re attached to being unattached. Actively desiring to be desireless is still a desire. Letting go of a thought is still a thought. Surrendering to a feeling is still a feeling. I think most (smart) people who are turned off by Eastern Philosophy at first glance intuitively recognize this. And rightly so…

By that definition of desire and attachment, you’re screwed if you do and screwed if you don’t.

The catch is that actively being unattached to everything is still being attached to something. You’re attached to being unattached.

A more proper explanation would be that it refers not to just something that you want or desire, but rather to things you are afraid to lose. In life, everything is lost. Everything. At some point, everything goes away, and therefore to have anything at all, we must be willing to accommodate that loss.

You know that saying, “You can’t truly have something until you’re willing to lose it?” It’s like that.

Zen imageIt’s not about doing or not doing. It’s all about how much of your sense of Self, your identity is attached to the outcome of what you do or don’t do.

“Being present” isn’t ignoring the past or the future. That’s impossible actually, because the act of thinking about a past or a future is actually taking place in the present. It’s impossible to not be present. What changes is how you identify yourself. Or rather, how you identify your Self.

It’s about widening your perspective, expanding what you identify to be a potential part of You. Recognizing that you have such little control and little knowledge of, well, anything in the world, that you might as well let go and be humble about it. Have your career goals, thoughts and ideas, your hopes and dreams, but don’t attach the Self to it in such a way that you’ll suffer if you don’t achieve them. Remember what’s happened to you and enjoy your memories, but don’t base your identity on it.

Obviously, this is all easier said than done.

The way I explain it is recognizing that it’s all just a game that we’re playing, the game is called life. And I don’t mean in the business, climb-the-ladder analogy, but in the fact that ultimately everything that we are and do is just a cosmic interplay between seemingly separate manifestations of consciousness. Most people never realize it’s a game. As a result, they are slaves to the ebbs and flows of what’s played.

But there are people who slowly realize that it’s just a game. Some of these people find out by refusing to play. Some find out by simply stopping and paying attention. Some find out by almost being removed from the game. Some realize it by watching others being removed before their eyes. But in the end, for whatever reason, they realize it’s just a game. And because it’s just a game, they have no reason to be worried or afraid, ever, because it’s just a game. And whoever wins or loses doesn’t matter because it’s just going to start all over again.

Everyone kind of assumes we know what compatibility and chemistry mean and whether we have them or not.

Dating advice mostly ignores diving into compatibility and chemistry because they can’t be faked or changed. These ideas are there or they are not.

Instead, most dating advice focuses on the nuts and bolts of dating: what to say, when to say it, how to not look like an ass-face. Dating advice also caters to people who want the “hacks.” They want to know how to get that person who we feel is out of our league, to somehow trick or coax or cajole them into noticing us: 3 things to say to the girl we’ve never had before. Here’s what to wear to attract the man we’ve fantasized about. Don’t talk about pineapples on the first date if you don’t want to die alone.1

And if that guy or girl who’s out of our league is actually not compatible with us, well, we don’t really want to hear about that.

The terms compatibility and chemistry are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. A lot of people use the words loosely to try to define that thing which exists in the space between two people—the unspeakable and unseen connection (or lack thereof). But they’re not the same thing at all, and understanding the difference is crucial if you want a happy, healthy, and long-term relationship.

WHAT IS COMPATIBILITY?
Compatibility is the natural alignment of lifestyle choices and values of two people. A youth minister and a drug dealer are probably incompatible and I doubt many end up dating each other.

If I value women who are intelligent and educated and I meet a high school dropout who is attracted to guys who have big muscles and like to hunt deer, then we have a fundamental incompatibility that will probably never be overcome and we will never date one another. At least, not for long.

Compatibility is about the long-term potential of two people. High compatibility comes from similarities in lifestyles and values. Generally speaking, educated liberal people usually date other educated and liberal people. Hedonists usually date other hedonists. Insane religious nuts usually date other insane religious nuts.2

Areas of Compatibility
Life priorities – Where does each of you see yourself in the next five years? Is it climbing the corporate ladder or living out your days on a tropical beach? Does one want to have a kid and settle down while the other wants a carefree life?
Preferences – Are there activities you both enjoy? Is one of you comfortable living in a dumpster while the other is a clean freak? Does one turn up to dates on time while the other is perennially two hours late?
Fundamental beliefs – Is one of you a career scientist while the other bounces from one conspiracy theory to another?
Values – Our values are the origin from which most (if not all) of the above flow. If your values are not aligned with your significant other’s, then I have bad news for you.
Favorite flavor of burrito – It all comes back to burritos. Always.
WHAT IS CHEMISTRY?
Chemistry, on the other hand, represents the emotional connection present when two people are together. When there is a high degree of chemistry, that strong connection can bring out warm, fuzzy emotions in each other, creating a kind of positive feedback loop through which two people continue to make each other feel better and better.

When you have a high degree of chemistry with someone, they monopolize your thoughts and/or your free time. You’ll stay awake talking till the sun comes up and not even feel like an hour went by. You’ll hope that every call or text is him/her. You’ll walk through life constantly wondering, “What would he/she think about x?” where x is a song, a bird, a walk through the park, a traffic jam, or a colonoscopy.

Call it passion; call it love; call it sickness. The basic traits of your/their personality and your/their slightest behaviors ravage each others’ dopamine receptors in a neurological orgy of starry-eyed dreaminess.

How they always ask you for a bite of your burrito and when you say no they take a bite anyways but look so damn cute while doing it you can never bring yourself to feel mad—this is the definition of true love, by the way.
Chemistry is made up of subtle behaviors and dispositions that mesh with behaviors and dispositions of the other person. What’s created is a kind of closed karmic loop in which chemistry is felt by both parties equally. The most important rule about chemistry is that whatever you’re feeling, he or she is most likely feeling the same way. You almost become empaths with one another.

The artist Alex Grey once said, “True love is when two people have pathologies that complement one another.” He was only half-joking.

High levels of chemistry usually come from opposite yet complementary qualities in people. A woman who is highly-strung, energetic, and slightly neurotic will tend to have a high degree of chemistry with a guy who is relaxed, mellow, and open. Introverts often have natural chemistry with extroverts. People who are orderly and intense planners sometimes work best with people who are spontaneous and unorganized.

Unlike a lack of compatibility, a lack of chemistry doesn’t repel—it simply results in a lack of emotional intensity. Things just feel kind of dead and boring.

Chemistry is also reflected in the bedroom. A lack of chemistry will mean boring, emotionless sex. A high degree of chemistry will mean intense, life-altering, heart-pounding sex that causes your mind to cosmically splatter itself on the walls of your consciousness. Good times.

HEALTHY AND TOXIC COMBINATIONS OF COMPATIBILITY AND CHEMISTRY
Unfortunately, compatibility and chemistry don’t always occur together.

A relationship with high compatibility but little chemistry is likely to be a boring yet comfortable series of meetings and conversations. It will be a dry and dull affair until both parties simply stop caring and drift apart, or they consummate their mutual convenience by getting married and find themselves in a lifetime of uncomplicated and (often) asexual companionship. Sadly, this arrangement isn’t uncommon.

Chemistry without compatibility, on the other hand, usually leads to disaster.4 Sometimes it can be as simple as not living in the same part of the world, but often it’s far more complicated than that.

When two people are completely incompatible, their behavior becomes completely irrational. Too often, two incompatible people initiate a cycle of mutual emotional immolation, spiraling through love/hate cycles together at the speed of life.

People find themselves saying things like, “I don’t care if he’s married to a convicted felon, we’re meant to be together,” or “Look, I know she faked being pregnant to get me to propose to her, but you know, it may just be fate, right?” Meanwhile, friends stare, jaws agape, unsure whether to risk the backlash by trying to snap them out of it or to feign support while their love-blind torture victim pal continues to spin helpless and deluded in a tornado of love.

High levels of chemistry with major incompatibilities is bad news. Really bad news.

These relationships usually begin quickly and passionately, exploding like a geyser, before dying down just as quickly as it erupted. This tends to happen when logic kicks in and when reality makes itself known. Suddenly, you realize how fucking offensive you find each other, but getting out of such a relationship is easier said than done. Your heart says yes, but your head says no. And then you convince your head to say yes, which in turn makes your heart say no.

At this point, your decision making usually defaults to your genitals—even though their track record for decision making is about as good as a drunk third-grader’s—which only leads to embarrassing public arguments, unpaid drink tabs, thrown iPhones, changed locks, unanswered phone calls, tear-ridden voicemails, and the sterile interior of a clinic, or if you’re lucky, an oh-god-please-don’t-give-me-a-false-positive-you-piece-of-shit-$9.99-pregnancy-test-from-a-7/11 experience, which is guaranteed to challenge anyone’s sanity.

And then there you are (wherever you go, as they say), and you find yourself jobless with two one-way tickets to Bermuda that were never used, six stitches, slashed car tires, and a shattered cell phone. But at least that psycho is fucking gone (even though you still kinda miss them). The experience is vicious yet thrilling, and will never let you forget that we are, after all, animals.

Not that I’m speaking from personal experience or anything. Nope. Nothing to see here. Move along.

The Chemistry-Compatibility Matrix
Low Chemistry/Low Compatibility
A relationship devoid not only of intimacy but probably basic conversation too. On the rare occasion this does happen, it doesn’t last long.

High Chemistry/Low Compatibility
When it feels so right, but you know it’s oh-so-wrong. AKA, the walking dumpster fire of a relationship.

Low Chemistry/High Compatibility
Boring, mostly asexual companionship. Entire relationship comprised of discussions about Netflix, sweatpants, and frozen meal planning.

High Chemistry/High Compatibility
The sweet spot. Great balance between intimacy and practicality. Oh yeah, baby.

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT
Spoiler alert: you won’t.

Search all you want, but you will never, ever, find someone who has 100% compatibility and chemistry with you.

Someone whose life priorities are perfectly aligned with yours may still enjoy completely different leisure activities. You may swoon every time your partner smiles at you but get irritated by how they always make that weird sound when breathing.

100% compatibility and chemistry doesn’t exist. You’d be dating yourself. And even then, you’re going to have a bad time—I mean, have you spent any time with yourself lately?

70-80% compatibility and chemistry is what you should be aiming for. Is there a way to measure this? Fuck no. But that feels about right to me. This is more than enough to have a well-functioning relationship, to build a partnership based on mutual respect, to fall a little more in love with each passing day but also weather the storms when love just doesn’t seem to be enough.

And here’s the dirty little secret: you don’t want that remaining 20-30%. It’s actually dealing with those “flaws” and surmounting the small irritations that makes a relationship feel meaningful and rewarding. So stop looking for “the one.” Stop dreaming of someone who finishes all your sentences and does everything you want them to, exactly the way you like it. They don’t exist. That’s not a relationship, that’s a rich fantasy life.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Navigating the dating landscape with confidence requires that you understand compatibility and chemistry. If you want to ultimately end up enjoying your time with an amazing partner—and I don’t just mean enjoying sex (that should be a given, sex is neat-o), but I mean really, truly enjoying your time together—then it’s important you get a cognitive handle on these emotional indicators of compatibility and chemistry.

The most important aspect is understanding what you want—what makes a person compatible with you, what personality traits have chemistry with you? The first question you should ask yourself is “What do I want?”5 And then you should probably ask yourself a few more questions.

You need to know what you like and what you want in a partner. Like if you want kids or not,6 or if you are really into blondes. Those answers matter. If you don’t know, then you need to cautiously gain enough experience until you do know.

Back when I was dating, I found that I was incapable of dating girls who weren’t incredibly smart. I could make it 2-3 dates with a woman of average intelligence or less and that was usually solely by merit of drowning my entire face in alcohol. Since a long-term relationship with these women would have necessitated that I take up alcoholism as a hobby, we inevitably parted ways. I also learned that I don’t work well with women who are particularly religious or who have socially conservative values. Just not my thing.

I learned that I have chemistry with women who are driven and ambitious. Their personalities work with mine in a unique, yet comfortable way (for both of us). I’ve also found my personality meshes well with women who are a tad neurotic, as I’m generally too laid back for my own good. I “click” with women who appreciate a dark, sarcastic wit and are very giving and caring. In my dating days, I regularly found myself seeing teachers, nurses, social workers, volunteer workers, etc. for multiple dates, which sometimes progressed to a serious relationship.

My favorite model for relationships comes from the work of anthropologist Helen Fisher. She’s dedicated decades of her life and her career to studying and understanding love, intimacy, and relationships. This post will cover her Three Loves Theory, a theory that I find incredibly helpful for understanding relationships.

The premise of the Three Loves Theory is that not all love is experienced equally. Anyone with a fair amount of romantic/sexual experience could tell you that love and passion come in different flavors. With some people it’s intense and furious, with others it’s mellow and sensitive. With some, it’s tumultuous with a lot of ups and downs, with others it’s slow and consistent over a long period of time.

But this isn’t just theorizing. Scientists like Fisher have studied the cognitive and neurobiological processes underlying attraction and love, and they’ve begun to pinpoint different emotions that occur at different stages of romantic relationships.1 Through these studies, Fisher was able to map the neurobiological components of each love experience and then match them to real-world social realities.2

The three loves that she came up with are the following: Lust, Passion, and Commitment.3 These three loves occur in different parts of the brain and occur independently from each other. For instance, you can be “in lust” with someone but have no perceived commitment to them (e.g., one night stands).

But before we get into that, let’s cover what the three loves are specifically.

LOVE ONE: LUST
Lust is a feeling that anyone should be able to relate to easily. It comes from the reptilian brain and is pure, instinctual reproduction.4 Lust is a yes/no proposition: basically, do you want to have sex with this person at this moment? It’s instantaneous and based on pretty straightforward physical and behavioral components of attraction.

Lust can also leave just as quickly as it came. It’s transitory and shifts constantly within a person. It has no attachment or favoritism. It’s really as simple as, “Do I want to fuck him/her right now? Yes or no?”

LOVE TWO: PASSION
Passion is the emotional connection that occurs between two people. It’s rooted in the mammalian brain.5 Two people in passion are considered “smitten.” They stare at each other, want to spend every hour of every day together, stay up until 6AM together talking.

Think newlyweds and honeymoons. Think romantic getaways. Think Romeo and Juliet. Passion is created by having a high degree of emotional chemistry as well as cultivating a sense of “newness” or spontaneity within the relationship. Hence, old married couples who plan romantic getaways to rekindle the passion in their relationship.

Passion has an incredible power to override a person’s logical functioning. It often cajoles us into making less-than-stellar statements and commitments.

It’s the boyfriend who says he loves his new girlfriend and then four months later changes his mind. It’s the girl who dreams for a year of moving in with her boyfriend and then as soon as she does, she realizes she doesn’t love him as much as she thought.

Blinded by passion, we get caught up in the moment and project an endless and utopian future for the relationship.

Passion cannot be cultivated without lust, although a couple can remain passionate with one another after the lust disappears (again, think of an old married couple).

Passion’s death is wrought by a lack of shared experience and lack of newness. Once a couple hits the point after 6-12 months together where the “newness” of the other person starts to wear off, a serious test of their compatibility will arise.

If that couple can merge their lives together in such a way that they continuously share their new experiences with one another, then passion will continue. If not, then it will eventually fall by the wayside.

Which brings us to the third and final love.

LOVE THREE: COMMITMENT
If two people remain in passion for long enough, and there is a long-term compatibility where they can continue to share new life experiences together indefinitely, then commitment will arise. Commitment is an unbelievably powerful feeling and occurs rarely in life.

Commitment is when the passion of Love Two persists to the point that it’s unconditional. Couples that are in Love Two and not Love Three will often feel great until something happens: he loses his job, she has a miscarriage, he starts drinking, etc.

Commitment is when you emotionally accept and love the other person’s flaws as much as their strengths. Scientists have actually shown that for couples who reach that level of commitment, their senses of self actually merge with the other person.6

What researchers have done is observe neural activation patterns in these long-term couples. They found that if you ask a man married for 20 years to think about his wife getting into a car accident, and then ask him to think about himself getting into a car accident, the same “self” spots in his brain will light up, whereas it won’t for anybody else. And it won’t for couples who have not been at the Third Love of commitment for a long period of time.

Commitment arises with the idea that the relationship will persist indefinitely. The only way it can end is if one or both parties of a relationship change individually to the point where it becomes harmful for the other person to self-identify with their partner: again, think of the husband who becomes an alcoholic, or the wife who keeps cheating, etc. Sometimes even then, the power of commitment holds on, depending on the individuals.

Passion and Lust can disappear well after Commitment arises without affecting the Commitment. In this way, each love is a pre-requisite for the subsequent love to emerge, but once it has, it’s no longer necessary. Lust is needed for passion, but passion can exist later without it. Passion must exist for commitment, but later on, commitment can exist without it.

There are timetables for each love, although these are very arbitrary and will vary widely from person to person and couple to couple.

But it’s helpful to think about this: Lust is instantaneous and comes and goes constantly, being very easy to retrieve once lost.

Passion takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to emerge, and usually sticks around for 3-6 months. In highly compatible couples, it will persevere but still require effort and constant communication to maintain beyond a couple years.

Commitment arises after anywhere from 1-3 years together and remains for a lifetime unless two people grow apart as individuals, in which case it often takes years to undo itself.

n the internet age, everyone and their dog is an expert on something. The beauty and the curse of the internet is that everyone has an opinion and is going to share it. And not only are we all going to share it, but we’re more convinced than ever of how right we are.

So I’ve come up with six basic principles to follow when giving advice. You know, because I’m so convinced of how fucking right I always am.

I think these principles are widely applicable, whether you’re helping your nephew deal with bullies at school, or critiquing some guy’s Starcraft theory on a nerd forum, or giving life advice to your brother. If you genuinely want to help someone, I recommend following these six principles when giving advice.

1. MAKE SURE THE PERSON ACTUALLY WANTS ADVICE
No type of advice is worse than unsolicited advice. No one is more likely to be ignored than a nosy know-it-all. Make sure the person you’re trying to help is actually looking for help, lest you come across as a condescending asshole.

Bad Advice Example: In response to someone excited about getting accepted to graduate school.

Hey, that’s cool you got accepted, but honestly graduate school is a waste of money. The debt you incur is hardly worth the slight bump you may get on your resume. My cousin spent all this money on grad school, had no social life for years and now is stuck in a job he doesn’t like only because it pays well and can pay off his debt.

The only thing you’re helping here is the perception that you’re a dick.

2. MAKE SURE YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT
The second biggest sin of advice-giving is giving someone advice when you don’t have the proper experience yourself. The person you’re trying to help may not notice, but I guarantee you people who do have the experience will notice. And whether they say anything or not, you will lose credibility. As the old adage goes: “He who thinks he knows everything, learns nothing.”

If you don’t have experience but you do feel like you have an important or useful observation to make, then you should always qualify it by saying: “I’ve never had this problem before, but it seems to me…” or something similar before speaking or posting.

3. MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE, NOT WHERE YOU ARE
It’s difficult for many of us to step outside of ourselves and to imagine the place others may be stuck in. Many of us have the tendency to project our own issues and successes onto others even when it’s not warranted. Giving advice based on your life situation and not theirs is ineffective at best and embarrassing at worst.

Bad Advice Example: In response to someone talking about a petty argument with their sister.

I hear you on having to deal with family members. One thing that you have to understand is that regardless of what they say, your family usually doesn’t actually care about you and will just do whatever they want. There was one time my brother borrowed my car and—etc.

4. PSYCHOANALYSIS IS NOT ADVICE, IT’S CONDESCENDING
This seems to be the most common error on self-development and dating forums. The worst part about this is that you may even be right, but you’re still not helping anybody. The quickest way to piss someone off and shut yourself out is to try and tell them who they are, why they’re having the thoughts they’re having, why they’re making the mistakes they’re making and so on.

Things only get worse if you start making assumptions about their character, their life, or their past.

This relates to meeting people where they are, but just because you notice something doesn’t mean you have to fix it. If someone has an overly-negative attitude and thinks the world is against them, then telling them they have a negative attitude is not likely to help them. They’re going to perceive you to be condescending and just another part of that world that is aligned against them. The best way is to meet them where they are and answer their questions in the simplest way possible for them to understand.

Bad Advice Example: In response to someone complaining about how hard it is to make friends in their new town.

Look, you obviously come from a screwed up background and now you’re viewing every opportunity in front of you as something you’re going to fail at before you even try. This is because you have low self esteem and your attitude and beliefs are only going to perpetuate it.

This is a pitfall that I fall into most often when giving advice, and it can easily push the person away from taking me seriously. It is useful to note that sometimes people ARE looking for specific observations on their mindsets and worldviews, and in those situations, advice like this is useful. But again, if they’re not looking for it, then giving it to them is not going to go well.

5. CRITICIZE THEIR ACTIONS, NOT THEIR CHARACTER
Or as it’s more commonly known: love the sinner, hate the sin. It’s important to differentiate the actions of a person from their intentions. You’d be amazed how often people do stupid things with really noble intentions. Anyone who’s grown up with overly critical parents knows the sting of someone judging your character based on some mistake you made.

Bad Advice Example: In response to a guy saying something creepy to a woman.

My God, do you have no respect for women? Just stop trying to meet them altogether if that’s the way you’re going to go about it. That’s disgusting.

6. PEOPLE DO NOT OWE YOU ANYTHING
Just because you take the time to give someone advice does not mean they’re obligated to use it and it does not mean that they owe you any gratitude or anything in return. Too many times (particularly on forums) I see someone who has given advice gets upset that the other person didn’t use it.

They have no responsibility to use it. It’s their life. It’s their path. If what you say resonates with them, they will identify with it and try it out. If not, then they owe you nothing. Advice is a gift. And as a gift, it is given unconditionally, with nothing expected in return.

And with that, you can take the advice of this article and use it, or you may disregard it. Whichever you choose.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard the saying, “The eyes are the window to the soul,” or some cheesy variation thereof.

Intuitively, we understand the power of eye contact. We’ve all experienced that moment when you look into someone’s eyes and see a million unspoken words. From the stern look in your mother’s face when the five-year-old you broke into the fridge and ate that tub of ice cream, to the scrutinizing gaze of the interviewer as you wondered whether you answered that last question well enough to secure the job of your dreams.

The power of the gaze is no mystery. There is a wealth of research behind it. Here are the highlights of what eye contact does.

It’s arousing. Looking into someone’s eyes will make you significantly more aroused than looking at someone whose gaze is averted.1 Simply having someone stare back at you could make you all sweaty and shit.2 This should be obvious even without the research: if you want to arouse someone, don’t look at the floor, look at them.
It captures and holds attention. If you want to catch someone’s attention, suddenly looking at them (even if you don’t move your head at all) will tend to do the trick.3 And if you want the person you’re having a conversation with to not be distracted, look them in the eye.4
It makes people believe you. When you tell someone something they don’t know to be true, they’ll tend to believe it if you look them in the eye. Even if it were something they know not to be true, they’ll still be slower to disagree.5
It makes people think you’re smart. We generally judge people who make eye contact with us to be smarter and more competent.6
It makes you appear more sincere. You’re in the bar hanging with your friends. The hottie from the back of the room who’s watching you will think you’re more sincere, less anxious, and more relaxed the more they see you look at your friends while interacting with them.7
You don’t have to believe in love at first sight (I don’t), to appreciate the power of eye contact. Simply meeting eyes with someone won’t make them fall head over heels for you, but it sure will do many other things that can turn them from a “maybe” to a “fuck yes.”

(DON’T) AVERT YOUR EYES!
If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re not entirely comfortable making eye contact with others. And that’s perfectly normal. 

Eye contact can be fucking intimidating. It feels as though we are exposing ourselves in some way, like we’re naked.

Generally, people find eye contact difficult for many reasons. Some suffer from trauma. Some have attachment and intimacy issues. Some are uncomfortable with who they are and therefore don’t wish to be seen. Some may have something to hide. And others may simply be shy, or inexperienced.

The goal of this guide is to peel the layers of eye contact and reveal to you a simple yet powerful action that anyone—yourself included—can master.

THE LEVELS OF EYE CONTACT
Here is an entirely overly-analytical, and mostly-satirical-but-kinda-true-too guide to the levels of eye contact and what sort of attraction it means.

LEVEL (-1): NO EYE CONTACT (INTENTIONAL)
Beyond the lowest level of eye contact, this is when someone is not only not making eye contact with you, but they’re consciously making an effort to NOT look at you. In the heights of sexual intimacy, Level (-1) is subterranean. It’s a person’s way of saying, “Get away from me, creep,” without, you know, actually saying it.

This eye contact (or lack thereof) is typically reserved for the horny mouth-breathers who stare at a girl’s tits, obnoxious drunk guys in full-on bro mode, the crazed ex-girlfriend stalker, or any other potential psycho in one’s vicinity.

Level (-1) eye contact can also occur within a conversation. Just because he or she is responding to you verbally doesn’t mean you’re out of the gates yet. Put simply, if someone is intentionally making an effort to NOT look at you, they’re not interested. It’s the anti-intimacy. The non-verbal cue for “Give it up… and go the fuck away from me.”

That or you have some mustard on your face.

LEVEL 0: NO EYE CONTACT (UNINTENTIONAL)
An unintentional absence of eye contact signals a lack of knowledge you exist. It means nothing other than they haven’t noticed you. Either they’re busy and focusing on something else, or you’re about as intriguing to look at as grandma’s wallpaper.

LEVEL 1: GLANCE (UNCONSCIOUS)
An unconscious glance is that moment when someone looks up at you and then immediately looks away, although they’re not aware of what they’re looking at. It’s basically when their eyes are wandering around and coincidentally meet yours for a moment and then continue wandering.

The key here is that he or she is not aware of your eyes meeting and therefore nothing is registering to them as particularly interesting or enticing in that moment. Just like Level 0, this level of eye contact is neutral and there’s not much to take away from it. Most people aren’t paying attention to what they’re looking at most of the time.

LEVEL 2: GLANCE (CONSCIOUS)
The second level of eye contact is the first type of eye contact where you’ve possibly made a positive impression on a person. This is when your eyes and theirs happen to meet and then they look away immediately, except they look away consciously, whether it be because of shyness, awkwardness, or disinterest.

Body language studies claim that a person who breaks eye contact with you by looking down is intimidated (i.e., attracted) and a person who breaks eye contact by looking to the side is indifferent (i.e., not attracted).8

I have no idea if this is true or not. But if someone breaks eye contact with you quickly and intentionally, it’s usually a polarized response: they’re either attracted and momentarily self-conscious by your presence, or they’re uninterested and avoiding making contact altogether.

Most people are not comfortable holding eye contact with strangers, what would signal the interest here is that their eyes were drawn to you in the first place. So it’s not the breaking it so much that is important, what’s important is that they consciously looked at you.

Differentiating between Level 2 eye contact and Level 1 eye contact is subtle and hard to do consistently with any sort of accuracy. Although you do pick up some acuity over time. It’s impossible to ever be 100% certain what someone else’s intentions are, so why not just assume everyone who makes strong eye contact with you is attracted until proven otherwise?

A good exercise for someone who is new or shy is to practice never breaking eye contact with people before they break it with you. Walk around all day and make eye contact with people you find interesting or attractive. You’ll feel uncomfortable making eye contact with strangers, but that’s the idea. Keep doing it until it feels natural. It will help your confidence.

LEVEL 3: GLANCE AND A HALF
Level 3 is the first level where interest is conveyed, ever so slightly. Like the other lower levels of eye contact, the glance-and-a-half is subtle and difficult to notice without a lot of practice. It’s when someone looks at you and breaks eye contact as they normally do, but they hold the eye contact for a split second longer than is normal. I’m talking maybe 1/4 of a second longer.

Whereas Level 2 eye contact may last half a second, Level 3 will last 3/4 of a second. It’s subtle, it’s short, and it’s unconscious. Humans are wired to spend more time looking at things they find attractive on an unconscious level. So in their mind, they’re still breaking eye contact with you, but in practice, they’re actually looking at you 50% longer than they would normally.

It took me a while to start picking up on Level 3 eye contact. Level 3 happens most often when they are consciously focused on something else, such as on their cell phone or talking to somebody they’re with. They don’t realize that they’re looking at you, though they totally are. Any eye contact from Level 3 upwards should be a strong incentive for the two of you to at least have a conversation.

LEVEL 4: DOUBLE GLANCE
Here’s a good habit to get yourself into once you’re able to maintain eye contact with people walking around. Any time you make eye contact with someone attractive and they look away, keep looking at them for another few seconds. A percentage of them will look at you a second time. In my experience, this is a clear sign of physical interest, and 95%+ of the subsequent interactions you initiate with this person will be received warmly.

What’s funny is that even on Level 4 eye contact, most people are not conscious that they’re doing it. I’ve approached women who have looked at me twice in a row and I mentioned that I saw them look at me, and they seriously didn’t remember looking at me. I’ve even said, “We did an eye contact thing. We made eye contact like three times in a row, you didn’t notice?” And they didn’t… or they were lying scumbags. Either way, just goes to show how most people are off in their own little world not thinking about any of this stuff.

Regardless, the unconscious mind is always seeking out things it finds interesting or intriguing, so if their eyes keep falling on you, it’s a sign.

LEVEL 5: THE GAZE
The Gaze is the last level that can occur unconsciously although it’s usually conscious. This is when someone looks at you and just keeps looking at you past the normal “look away” moment. This is a solid 2-3 seconds of eye contact without them breaking it. When undesired, this becomes the infamous “creep stare.” But in the cases of desirable people looking at you, this is extremely good news.

This is why it’s so important to get in the habit of being able to hold eye contact because otherwise, you’ll miss out on all of the people giving you Level 3-5 eye contact. The Gaze is a clear and large sign of interest. You’d be pretty dumb to pass up this signal.

LEVEL 6: THE SMILE
The sixth level of eye contact is The Gaze plus a smile. If The Gaze is a clear sign telling you that they’re interested, throwing a smile on top of it may as well be a neon flashing billboard. If someone you find attractive gives you Level 6 and you don’t talk to them, not only are you an idiot, but you probably have some serious anxiety going on.

LEVEL 7: THE EYE FUCK
This is someone who makes eye contact, holds it, smiles, and then never stops. They just keep staring and smiling, and staring and smiling, sometimes for minutes at a time.

Eye fucking is the first level of eye contact that makes the leap from “interested/curious” to “they want to have sex with me.” Eye fucking doesn’t withhold any intentions. It’s about as much interest as one can possibly display through eye contact alone. If you get eye fucked by an attractive person and don’t act on it, you’re probably blind or mid-seizure. I can’t think of any other reasonable explanation.9

When undesired, The Eye Fuck is exceedingly creepy. If you’re a man and you regularly eye fuck women who do not reciprocate or smile back, then you will likely meet Mr. Pepper Spray in your near future.

Eye fuckers will often end up approaching you if you don’t approach. Although many of them will give up if you don’t approach for a few minutes and assume you’re not interested. If you’re a man and a woman is eye fucking you, the hint should be clear: she wants you to talk to her.

LEVEL 8: THE DREAMBOAT
The Dreamboat happens when someone has fallen for you. This is when you wake up in the morning to someone staring at you with that dreamy smile like they’re drunk or stayed up all night sniffing glue. It’s the way two people look at each other when cuddling and making cutesy noises while rubbing their noses together.

The Dreamboat almost never happens before you’ve had sex with someone, and if it does, they’re either Amish or it’s a giant red flag. Usually, it starts happening a month or two into a new relationship, although it can happen in as little as a couple nights together (or in rare circumstances, one).

Assuming the feeling is mutual, The Dreamboat is amazing. It’s the most validating eye contact a person can give you. Centuries of literature and million-dollar films have thrived off of what The Dreamboat stare signifies. It’s what we humans are obsessed with on some level. And whether we like to admit it or not, it’s what most of us are after in the long-run. So when you find it, enjoy it.

But… if the feeling is not mutual, if The Dreamboat is a one-way street, it’s not always such a pleasant experience. Unrequited love is no fun for anybody. Nobody likes to break a heart and make those eyes cry. Just be honest and upfront, break things off with respect and dignity, and hope that their eyes don’t morph into…

LEVEL 9: THE CRAZIES
The 9th and final level of eye contact cannot be explained as much as experienced.

When you experience The Crazies, a person doesn’t even have to be present to see them. They haunt you. They’re everywhere and nowhere.

It’s the guy who wakes you up by banging on your window at 3AM crying that you never called him back. Or the girl who faked being pregnant because she thought it’d get you to get back together with her. Or the guy who carved your name into his arm as a birthday present.

They’re the eyes that look at you in earnest when they say they want to quit their job and move to Tahiti so that you two can be together, perfectly alone, forever. The Crazies signify delusion, hopeless emotion, and the complete loss of a grip on reality. The Crazies often come with a restraining order.

People who have seen The Crazies and lived to tell do so with a level of humility and despondence. Most have dealt with their share of irrational and dramatic relationships. Some have perhaps witnessed The Crazies for fleeting moments—an enraged girlfriend who ran around at him with a baseball bat, the guy who left her 43 angry voicemails in one night—and these people pass these stories of insanity around almost as a badge of honor.

But most of those who have seen the depths, looked into the eyes and seen the true amorous insanity behind them, like any true veteran prefer to keep the pain and horror stowed away in their hearts, not to see the light of day.

They say all is fair in love and war, and in certain places and at certain times, the two don’t feel so different. And like any war story, living it and telling it do neither justice.

WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Humans have a tendency to make things more difficult than they have to be. When we’re not sure we can do something, we put it off. We turn whatever “it” is into a 12-headed hydra that haunts our every waking moment. But if we’d just gone ahead and done it, we would have discovered “it” wasn’t so bad after all.

Eye contact is one such “it.” Unless you have a pathological fear, in which case you’d better seek professional help, eye contact is something you can practice and get good at.

If making eye contact with strangers is one level too far, you can begin with people you feel comfortable with. Next time you’re listening to your best friend tell you about their day, look into their eyes rather than at their ears,10 or at the wall behind them. Next time your partner is giving you The Dreamboat, curl up in it and let it take you out to sea. Drift away to its loving tunes.11 

Another easy trick is: if you feel uncomfortable looking into someone’s eyes, stand or sit a little further away from them. Research shows that the closer you stand to someone looking at you, the less you’re able to make eye contact, especially if the other person is of the opposite sex.12 Find that sweet spot that works for you.

Practice your eye contact. Learn to decode the 11 levels. Let your eyes be the windows to your soul. And your dating life will never be the same again.
